About

Welcome to Cancer and Candy

I have been told to write about what I know. Well, I definitely know about surviving childhood cancer. I was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia in 1983, I was 3 years old.  Luckily for me I don’t remember chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately, I do remember some of the devastating side effects. I have experienced everything from poor eyesight to early osteoporosis. A few years ago I enrolled in a survivorship clinic. Every six months I visit an oncologist who has reassured me that the many side effects I had been dealing with are not rare and that many cancer survivors are also dealing with cataracts and low bone density. We came up with a treatment plan which mostly consisted of staying proactive on all preventative and diagnostic treatments such as mammograms and DEXA scans. Not only am I now getting great healthcare I also have access to great resources to ensure I stay as healthy as possible. One of the intentions of this blog is to create a forum to share this information.

And Candy.  I know a lot about candy. Chocolate cake? No thanks. Crème Brule? I will pass. Skittles? Gummy Bears? Smarties? YES PLEASE! I love it all. Word has it (ok my mom told me) I was potty trained with M&M’s. In college I successfully petitioned for our convenient store to start carrying my favorite candy – chocolate covered gummy bears. Don’t judge them till you try them. Nowadays I can often be found at the local Tasti D-Lite (where they know me by name) filling one of those wonderful white paper bags with everything from reese’s pieces to strawberry nerds.

A little about me

My name is Allison and I’m 32 years old. I grew up in Wayland, Massachusetts and currently reside in New York City with my husband, Andrew and our dog Baci. I graduated from Union College and I received my Masters of Public Administration with a focus on Health Policy from Baruch College.

My full time job is working in hospital administration at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

In my spare time I like to be with my friends and family, go to the movies and the theater, travel and begrudgingly go to the gym.
